GUWAHATI: Good news for nature lovers as the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati city will be re-opened to visitors on December 31 next. Assam's Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya will formally flag off operations at the Zoo on the aforementioned date.
It needs mention here that the Zoo shut its doors in March when the first COVID-19 lockdown was enforced in the state. This move was necessitated to ensure the safety of the animals in the zoo.

Despite plans for a "staggered" reopening, the Zoo was kept closed over "safety concerns", even as other tourist hotspots such as the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve were reopened for tourists amid a financial crunch in the Government's coffers due to the COVID.
Divisional Forest Officer, Tejas Mariswamy earlier said that the Zoo would be reopened for the public in January, but the date has been pushed ahead as the number of COVID-19 cases has dwindled across the country.
