Guwhati, 14 January 2019:
The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday agreed to hear a plea challenging the much debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The plea was filed by Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill urging the top court to review it.
However, a three judge-bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Sanjay Krishnan Kaul and Ashok Bhushan directed the forum to wait for the decision in Rajya sabha over the Bill.
“If the Bill is not passed by Rajya Sabha, then this petition can be entertained“, the Bar and Bench quoted Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi as saying.
The petition challenges the government order exempting “persons belonging to minority communities in Bangladesh and Pakistan, namely, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who were compelled to seek shelter in India due to religious persecution or fear of religious persecution and entered into India on or before the December 31, 2014.
