Jorhat, February 2, 2020:

The Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) is struggling to preserve the body of an 81-year-old British tourist who had died on a cruise boat (Charaideo II) that was reportedly on a cruise along the mighty Brahmaputra river.

The body of the man, who has been identified as Alistair Neil Macdonald, was taken to the JMCH, and port mortem was carried out. Embalming was also done on the Britisher's body to delay decomposition.

However, somewhat embarrassingly for the JMCH, it was found that the cooling unit used to preserve the body was out of order. The higher authorities of the Health department were also intimated about the problem, reports said.

Sources also informed the media that the cooling unit, that has a capacity of 4, has not been functioning for 3 long years. And despite several efforts to get the machine going again, it would stop functioning after a few days, reports said.

Meanwhile, the Assam Government is said to be getting in touch with the British Embassy for necessary action for dealing with the elderly man's corpse.

It is to be mentioned that the tourist, who was part of a 60-members tourist team on a tour of the Northeast, was on a week-long tour of Upper Assam when he breathed his last aboard the cruise ship.
