Kokrajhar, October 2, 2019:

Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary has informed that the BTC elections will be held in February or March in 2020.

While addressing media persons here, Mohilary said, "Only five more months are left till the elections. They will be held either towards the fag end of February, or during the first week of June."

Hagrama made this admission on the sidelines of a programme in which Deben Boro was replaced by Bijit Gwra Narzary as EM of the Council.

Earlier, Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary had said that the alliance between the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bharatiya BJP, and BPF will remain intact. Hagrama’s announcement comes ahead of the all-important BTAD elections, tentatively scheduled for March, 2020.

Mohilary had also informed that the AGP-BJP-BPF party will contest the upcoming BTAD elections together. “We will share the seats with every party. Some seats will be allotted to AGP, some to the BJP, and the remaining will be with the BPF.”

Mohilary has also said that they are holding discussions with the UG Bragma-led UPPL party. “However, they have said that the merger of the parties at this point in time is not possible”, he said. “I have even promised the post of Rajya Sabha MP to UG Brahma. What more can we give?”

The UPPL party, meanwhile, has demanded that the BPF rename itself if they want to contest the upcoming polls in an alliance.

Meanwhile, Kokrajhar MP Naba Kumar Sarania has also formed a party called the 'People's Protection Party' to contest the high-octane polls in the State.

While speaking to Inside Northeast, Sarania said that the main motive behind the party’s launch is to secure the rights of all the people living in the BTAD area. “Some of the issues have reached boiling point, and it is finally time to address them. For instance, many people living here have no land rights, no means of earning a living. Unless these people are given a political voice, their concerns will never reach Dispur”, Sarania divulged.
