GUWAHATI: Assam Health, Finance, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the elections in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) shall be held within December 10 and a new Government shall be formed in the Council within December 15 next.
Making the announcement at a massive rally in Kokrajhar, Sarma also raised slogans of "We have seen the BPF rule time and time again, we will see the BJP this time," referencing the 15 years of the BPF party's rule Bodo-dominated region of Assam.
Earlier, the Gauhati High Court has directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to release an election notification with regard to the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council elections and declare the election date by November 20.
The Court gave the order after the hearing a PIL filed on the BTC election. The order was passed by a division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising of Justice Manish Choudhury and Chief Justice (acting) N Kotiswar Singh.
According to reports, the elections in the 40-member Council shall be held in two phases. The BTC elections was to be held on April 4 but was delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic. Governor's rule was imposed and is still in place.
