KOKRAJHAR: Tomorrow, voters in the Constituencies falling under the Kokrajhar and Chirang districts shall head to the polling booths in their bid to elect the new administration in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) of Assam. The voting time has been scheduled from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm. The phase I was held on December 7 last.
Assam State Election Commissioner Alok Kumar has said that the counting of votes for both phases of the polls will start from 8am on December 12, 2020 till completion.
In the second phase of polling, 10,23,404 voters will decide the future of 111 candidates by exercising their franchise across 1,407 polling stations. In the second round of voting, votes will be case in 19 Constituencies across the two districts.
It may be mentioned that the Gauhati High Court had earlier directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to release an election notification with regard to the BTC elections and declare the poll date by November 20, 2020.
Elections to the 40-member BTC were earlier scheduled by the Commission on April 4, 2020 but had to be deferred because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Council comprising 4 Assam districts has been under Assam Governor Jagadish Mukhi's rule on expiry of its five-year term on April 27, 2020.
BJP is fighting against its alliance partner Bodoland People's Front while Congress and AIUDF are in alliance in this election. The Promod Boro led United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and Naba Sarania led Gana Suraksha Party (GSP) are the other contenders in the fray.
Polling took place in the first phase of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) election on Monday, with 77% of the eligible voters turning out. Polling started at 7:30 am and continued till 4:30 pm in 1,739 polling stations.
Assembly polls in Assam are due in March-April this year.
