BTC: 'Unauthorized' campaign offices of BJP & BPF parties vandalized ahead of polls in Chirang

BASUGAON: A couple of days before the commencement of Phase-I of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections on Monday, miscreants vandalized 'unauthorized' campaign offices of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday night in Basugaon under Chirang, Assam.

According to reports, the BPF’s office in Ward Number 4 in Goglapara was set on fire by miscreants. The incinerated materials included official documents and party banners, posters, and flags, said the reports.

"These offices that were vandalized in the middle of the night, apparently, were all unauthorized offices set up by the political parties right beside the road," Sudhakar Singh, Superintendent of Police of Chirang told Informed Inside Northeast. "Although our patrolling parties were doing the rounds to prevent election-related violence, the acts of vandalism apparently happened when they weren't around."

Singh also informed that the parties have decided to lodge FIRs against the acts of vandalism. "We will look into the matter and carry out investigations once the complaints are filed," he added.

Tomorrow, 10 Constituencies in Udalguri and 11 in Baksa are all set to head to the polling booths tomorrow. The second phase of the polls will be held on December 10. The votes of both the 1st phase and the 2nd phase of polling will be counted on December 12.

The BTC elections — that will see 3 prime contenders — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) go head to head, are being seen as a “semifinal” ahead of the all-important polls in the State of Assam to be held in the first quarter of 2021.
