BTR Election: Hagrama Mohilary trailing in 2 Constituencies, UPPL widens leadtrailing

KOKRAJHAR: Amid a rather dismal showing for the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) party in the 2020 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), three-time former CEM Hagrama Mohilary is trailing in both the Constituencies he has contested in -- Kachugaon and Debargaon.

At this point in time, it appears that the political fate of Mohilary could be hanging in the balance. The fact that Hagrama, a political stalwart in the region, is trailing, has come as a shocker to many. Even before a single vote was cast, experts and pundits predicted that the anti-incumbency factor and numerous allegations of corruption against the former Chief could play a huge role in the election.

Meanwhile, the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) led by Promod Boro is continuing its strong showing in the early rounds of voting in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls. As per the latest, BTC election update, the Promod Boro led outfit has now leaped ahead in 26 of the 40 Constituencies in the region.

Meanwhile, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) party is leading in 6 Constituencies, while the BJP is leading in 6 Seats. The saffron party's leaders -- especially Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma -- campaigned extensively in the region ahead of the polls.

In these initial stages, it is believed that the anti-incumbency factor is playing a major role in the fourth election in the Council, which seems to have hurt Hagrama Mohilary's re-election chances. Moreover, UPPL Chief Promod Boro's assertions that the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) treaty will be implemented in letter and spirit if a new regime takes over, seems to have proved to be a popular ticket.
