GUWAHATI: The Promod Boro-led United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) has surged into leads in 20 of the 40 Constituencies in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC). Meanwhile, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) is leading 10 of the Constituencies -- a distant second. Election in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) is expected to be a three-way contest between the BPF-UPPL-BJP.

As per the latest trends, the BJP party which electioneered extensively in the region, is leading in a mere 3 seats, with the Congress-AIUDF combine leading in a single seat. "Others" are leading in two seats.

Meanwhile, security forces have been deployed outside the counting stations to ensure peace and tranquility during the process.

The voting for the BTC election was held in two phases -- on December 7 and 10. The turnout was registered at 77.01% in the first phase, while the turnout was 78% in the second round of voting.

A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise. The BTR election was earlier scheduled to be held on April 4 but postponed due to COVID-19. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi took the charge of the council after five-year term of BTC ended in April.
