KOKRAJHAR: Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has surged ahead in 18 Constituencies in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls, with the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and the BJP nipping at its heels. The BTR Polls were held in two phases on December 7 and 10.

While the UPPL has established leads in 10 Constituencies, the BJP has established leads in 9.

At the time of filing of this report, the BPF has won 6 Seats, while the UPPL and the BJP have won a single Seat each.

In a shocking show of power, the BPF is leading in 10 out of the 12 Constituencies in Kokrajhar, where the main headquarter of the Council is located.

In Chirang also, the BPF has performed strongly, galloping to leads in as many as 5 Constituencies.

In Udalguri district, the UPPL is leading in 5 Constituencies, the BJP is leading in 3 Constituencies, and the BPF is leading in 2.

In Baksa, UPPL is leading in 4 Constituencies, BPF in 1, and the BJP in 4. "Others" are leading in 2 Seats.

Although the UPPL seemed poised for an unlikely triumph in the early rounds of voting, the BPF turned the tables in the later rounds.

The BPF is currently in an alliance with the ruling BJP party. However, the BJP's leadership has said that it is unlikely to resume the partnership post-2021 Assembly elections. There have been murmurs that the BJP party is secretly supporting the UPPL, although both parties' leaders have denied the claims.

What will be interesting to note is what will happen if the current trends continue? Will the BPF resume its alliance with allies-turned-bitter rivals BJP? Or will the BJP and UPPL join hands?

Over 78 percent voter turnout was recorded on Thursday in Bodo Territorial Council’s (BTC) second and final phase of polling, which witnessed police firing in the air to control a clash between BPF and UPPL supporters in Chirang district of Assam.

Till the closing of the BTR polls at 4.30 pm, 78.80 per cent of 10,23,404 voters exercised their franchise, deciding the fate of 111 candidates for 19 constituencies spread across Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.

The much-awaited voting for the BTC began on December 7 with over 77.01 per cent voters exercising their franchise in the first phase of polling for 21 seats in Udalguri and Baksa districts, where 130 candidates have contested.

Out of the total 3,164 polling booths in the four districts, the authorities marked 606 as very sensitive and 1,266 as sensitive, and arranged tight security measures in those.

A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise to elect their representatives for the local council, formed in 2003 and elections being held since 2005.
