The families of five people killed by unidentified miscreants near the Dhola-Sadiya bridge in Tinsukia district of Assam are today devastated.
Five of those who were made to kneel down and shot from the back in an open field on November 1 evening were two brothers. One of them had a one-year-old daughter, who does not know what has happened.
22 year old Abhinash Biswas, father of the one-year-old girl, and his brother Anant, 18, toiled in the fields every day to provide for the family that lived in a mud and bamboo home with four small rooms. The father of the two dead men Mohanlal Biswas is old and ailing.
After wrapping up their farm work for the day, the two men had returned from the fields and sat down at a tea shop that they ran from a makeshift room on their verandah. Suddenly, several masked men, armed and wearing what looked like Army fatigue, came to the shop and told the men to step out.
Mohanlal Biswas said the armed men took his sons, who apparently did not suspect anything at first, across a rusty iron bridge a few yards from their home. They were told to walk down to a grassy patch just off the road and kneel down. Both the brothers were gunned down along with three others.
Shyamala Biswas, the mother of Abhinash and Anant said, “My sons were the lone bread earners, who will fend our family now. Why did my sons got killed, she questioned.”
“I demand Rupees Twenty lakh and a government job for my daughter in-law as compensation,” said Mohanlal.
A broken Urmila, who is the wife of Abhinash demanded stern action against the perpetrators.
Not only his sons, Mohanlal has also lost his 60 year old brother Shyamlal Biswas. Shyamlal was one of those killed by the assailants.
