Guwahati, January 13, 2019:

Lauding the students of the Cotton University for their initiative to burn copies of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act in a traditional meji (traditional bonfire), All Assam Students' Union (AASU) leader Samujjal Bhattacharya on Monday urged the people of the state to feed the CAA to flames during the auspicious occasion of Bihu.

The chief advisor of the AASU, while talking to Inside Northeast, stated "The student community of the prestigious Cotton University have expressed their resentment in a very effective manner", and appealed the people of the state, on behalf of the AASU and the 30 other organizations, to burn the controversial legislation on Bihu.

"They have imposed CAA, now they issued notification for implementation of CAA. But at any cost at any atmosphere we won't accept", Bhattacharya stated, maintaining that the "democratic" and "non-violent" protests against the legislation would continue unabated across the State.

Stating that the legislation is "anti-indigenous, anti-Northeast, communal, and unconstitutional", Bhattacharya assured that the non-violent movement against the CAA would continue across the Northeast.

Reacting to the students' movement against the controversial CAA, Bhattacharya stated that the students will keep pursuing their studies and sports, while taking part in the democratic protests at the same time, until the legislation is repealed by the Central Government.
