A high-profile abduction case has sent shockwaves through Tirap district after a businessman and a local Panchayat member were allegedly kidnapped by militants of the NSCN-K (Angmai) faction. The victims have reportedly been taken across the India–Myanmar border.
The abducted individuals have been identified as Vijay Shankar Aggarwal, a prominent businessman, and B. Lamati, an elected Panchayat member.
Sources said the duo had travelled to the Lazu area last week to deliver ransom money linked to an extortion demand made against Aggarwal by the insurgent outfit in the previous month.
However, instead of securing their release, militants allegedly seized both men and transported them into Myanmar territory.
Police have registered a case and initiated a coordinated search and rescue operation. Security agencies are working to trace the escape route and verify intelligence inputs to locate the abducted individuals.
Tirap district, which lies close to the porous international border, has witnessed multiple incidents of insurgent-linked extortion and abduction in recent years, deepening security concerns in the region.
Further investigation is underway.
