Dibrugarh, December 12, 2019:

Dibrugarh police has arrested 55 persons for indulging in acts of vandalism in Dibrugarh district during the recent uprisings against the controversial amendment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (or CAA). All of them have been forwarded to jail for judicial custody.

As per Police, the 55 CAA protesters were arrested from various parts of the district on the basis of incriminating video evidence collected from CCTV cameras and mobile video clips.

According to police, the 55 accused have been found indulging in violence, acts of vandalism, posting objectionable messages in social media, and destruction of public properties.

Meanwhile, 75 cases have been registered in connection with the recent vandalism in the district, with the maximum number of arrests being made in Chabua. According to our sources, the Railway Station, UBI bank, SDC Office, Post Office, and Town Government Office have all been burned down by the protesters. Not only this, the house of the local MLA, Binod Hazarika, was also torched by the agitators in resentment over the controversial legislation.

Dibrugarh police has already announced rewards to persons who can provide video evidence of acts of vandalism, so that the culprits can be arrested.

Meanwhile, the CAA violence in Assam, that was witnessed after the Bill's passage in the Parliament, as given way to a more peaceful brand of protest. The student unions and civil societies across the State giving a clarion call to the people to continue the protests in a "democratic" and "non-violent" manner until the much-reviled CAA is overthrown.
