The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leadership -- comprising Samujjal Bhattacharya, and Lurinjyoti Gogoi -- have been detained on the second day from the historic Latasil Playground in Guwahati city of Assam. According to reports, they were detained by authorities along with several others while carrying out a non-violent “Satyagraha” against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act.

The protesters are being detained at temporary barracks near the Dighalipukhri area in Guwahati city.
Reacting to being detained, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, “The public will not fear the authorities’ attempt to stomp down the protests”, adding that the Assamese people, exhibiting great unity, have cautioned the Centre that this “injustice” in the name of the Citizenship Amendment Act will not be tolerated. Gogoi also mentioned about the massive rally by the people under “Panitula Naamghar” in Tinsukia district and said, “people have moved out displaying the traditional attire and culture while protesting against the C(A)A is a clear example that this government cannot suppress the voice of the common people.”

It is to be mentioned here that on Monday also, the AASU leaders were detained while carrying out the Satyagraha rally, and were released after half an hour.
