Kokrajhar, December 18, 2019:

The last day of the “Satyagraha” movement organized by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) saw mass participation in all the districts of Assam. Kokrajhar district, too, witnessed a massive rally taken out against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in support of the “Satyagraha” movement that has been launched under the banner of AASU.

The protesters gathered at the Raasmela ground in the district, from where they took to the streets, chanting slogans against the BJP-led government.

With the chants “Ahoi Ah, Ulai Ah”, (come come, come out) and "Jai Aai Axom" the protesters in Kokrajhar district demanded the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP-government to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill turned Act.

Saying that the people of Assam would not accept the contentious Act, the protesters called upon the Assamese to join hands in these uncertain times and voice out against the Act.

It is to be mentioned here that the AASU has launched a three-day Satyagraha movement against the legislation that was passed in the Rajya Sabha on December 11 by a majority of 125 votes in its favour.

The Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha on December 9, by Union Home Minister Amit Shah which was passed overnight and on December 11, the Bill swiftly passed the Rajya Sabha test to become legislation. The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind on December 13 signed the Bill, giving it a green signal to become an 'Act'.

Meanwhile, the move of the Centre led to massive uprisings in the state of Assam, following which, the situation turned violent and the administration imposed curfews from December 12 to December 16 across the state.

Moreover, internet services have been suspended from the past 7 days, which has badly affected online trade and commerce in the State.
