Guwahati, January 2, 2020:

Amid the nationwide protests against the amendment of the Citizenship Act, the Central Government has announced a Government holiday on the occasion of Magh (or Bhogali) Bihu on January 15.

The announcement has been made amid the situation of unrest among the public after the Government's move to amend the Citizenship Act, seeking to provide citizenship to non-Muslims from the neighboring countries of Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Mass hysteria has swept Assam that shares porous borders with Muslim-majority Bangladesh, home to crores of non-Muslims, that could be naturalized after the amendment to the Act.

Now, it seems, the Government, to appease the protesting masses, has announced a single-day holiday for Government employees on the occasion of 'Magh Bihu', the first of the three Bihus celebrated by the Assamese community.

It may be mentioned here that in the earlier list published by the Government, 'Magh Bihu' had not been declared as a holiday for Central Government employees in Assam.
