CAA Row: KMSS Demands Govt to Immediately Release Akhil GogoiA KMSS protest in Dibrugarh

Moran, December 22, 2019:

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), an influential farmers' body of Assam, has staged a massive protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at the Bamunbari Tea Estate Playground at Moran in Dibrugarh district of Assam.

The protest, that was organized by the Lengeri sub-unit of the KMSS, was joined by many indigenous organizations of the area, who came out in great numbers to add to the opposition to the controversial CAA. The protesters demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the organization's leader, Akhil Gogoi, who has been sent to 10 days' NIA custody amid the ruckus over the CAA.

The protest was joined by several regional-level leaders of the KMSS; a section of the Dibrugarh University, that has been protesting against the CAA, also took part in the protest, where the student leaders tore into the Assam Government, and especially Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The students, condemning the University's move to hold the examinations amid mass unrest, also announced that the students would appear for the exams while wearing black badges, as a mark of protest against the CAA.

In recent times, the focus of the anti-CAA movement has shifted to other parts of India, with Lucknow in UP and the national capital New Delhi witnessing sustained uprisings against the allegedly "communal" and "unconstitutional" legislation.
