Over 30,000 people in Panitula in Tinsukia district of Assam staged a peaceful protest rally against the recently enacted Citizenship (Amendment) Act, on Monday. The rally was taken out from Panitula Naamghar to Tinsukia, through National Highway 37.
The mass rally was carried out under the banner of the ‘Panitula Bornamghar’. The protesters, displaying pride over their Assamese identity, exhibited “Satriya” culture and the protesters were clad in traditional “Satriya attire”.

The men wore traditional “dhuti-sola-gamusa” and women wore traditional white “mekhela-sador” and wrapped the “Assamese Gamusa”.
With the “gayan bayan” (artistes of the naamghar who performs naam- kirtan and plays the instruments- taal, khol, etc.) moving into the streets, the people chanted slogan against the PM Narendra Modi led BJP- government and demanded the government to discard the C(A)A.
It is to be mentioned here that the protests in Assam have seen no rest after the Centre passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at the Rajya Sabha, on Wednesday.
Despite intermittent curfews being imposed across the state, the people have launched massive protests in every nook and corner of Assam. People in Guwahati, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Chaboa, and all the other districts of the state are participating in these democratic protests.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) las launched a 3-day Satyagraha across the State from December 16-December 18. During one such display in Guwahati, AASU leaders Samujjal Bhattacharya, Dipankar Nath, and Lurinjyoti Gogoi have been detained by the police.
