Guwahati, December 14, 2019:

As many as 1100 passengers, who were stranded in the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport due to the massive protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (or CAB) in Assam, have been rescued by the transport department.

Speaking with Inside Northeast, Commissioner of Transport, Assam, Adil Khan said, “This is the third day of our operations. 23 buses were deployed on the first day with police escort, and the same number of buses were deployed in the ensuing days for the smooth evacuation of passengers.”

The Transport Commissioner also added that on December 12, a total of 14 buses were dispatched from Rupnagar depot and 9 buses from ISBT, to rescue the passengers stranded due to CAB protests. “The 23 buses made 27 trips whereas, around 1100 passengers were being transported to different places of the city,” he added.

“Late in the night on Friday, about 300 passengers from Shillong, including 100 women, were provided safe passage under the direct supervision of ADGP LR Bishnoi,” he added.

Adil Khan added that the allotment of these services have been taken up under DTO Kamrup as nodal officer, and this has been assisted by the enforcement staff.

Adding that 10 teams of transport department working for the evacuation and safe passage of stranded passengers, in coordination with police, Khan added, “Buses have been placed at Paltan Bazar Railway station for transporting passengers to Ganeshguri- Khanapara and other places via Jalukbari to Adabari to ISBT. Also, buses are being placed at Kamakhya station for transportation of passengers within Guwahati.”
