A car, which went missing in the Dikhow river on Saturday evening, was traced and retrieved along with the bodies of all five of its occupants, by the rescuers from Indian Navy, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

The vehicle was recovered from a place near the site of mishap at around 11:30 am on Wednesday. The recovery came following Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s personal request to the Prime Minister’s Office, Defence Ministry and Union Home Ministry seeking Centre’s help in tracing and recovering the vehicle. The Indian Navy had rushed a team of divers from Visakhapatnam.

The vehicle went missing with Guwahati businessman Haren Bora (52), his wife Phunu (45), his mother Punou (85) and the couple's two daughters Simpi (21) and Munmi (18).

The authorities used Navy, NDRF and SDRF divers and technologies including side scan sonar and magnet in the search and rescue operations. The vehicle’s presence in a depth of 20 ft was detected with the use of magnet, two SDRF jawans engaged in the operation, said.

The police said it was a combined effort of the rescuers that led to the car’s recovery. On that fateful day, the family was returning to Guwahati after visiting a relative in Sivasagar.
