CCTOA’s 12-hour Assam Bandh receives mixed response

The indigenous communities of Assam have been still fighting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Owing to the ongoing agitation, the Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organisations of Assam (CCTOA) has called for a 12 hour Assam Bandh today against the amendment of the Constitutional (Scheduled Tribes) Amendment Bill, 2019.

The bandh has stirred mixed reactions across the state. While Guwahati did not really adhere to the bandh as commercial places and vehicles were fully operational throughout the city, a few cases of violence were reported from other parts of the State where tyres were burnt and a number of vehicles were thrashed in the earlier part of the day.

Kokrajhar, Jagiroad,Morigoan, Orang, Routa, Kolaigoan, Nagoan and others were the most the effected by the bandh as normal life was hit with people and vehicles hardly seen in public areas.

Moreover the state has been observing outrageous protest prior to the Citizenship Bill was raised in both the houses of parliament when Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed the amendment of the bill at a public gathering in Silchar.

While whole of Assam wholeheartedly supported the bandh called by North East Student Organisation (NESO) on January 8, there is a mixed response of the bandh called by the tribal organizations today.
