A two-judge bench chaired by CJI Ranjan Gogoi on Friday heard on the matter of publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the appeal of re-verification before publishing the final draft, for which the further hearing will be held on July 23. Meanwhile, the NRC co-ordinator Prateek Haleja has brought to light the fact that there was an issue of serious floods in Assam which have further slowed down the NRC process.
Assam Public Works (APW) working president Abhijeet Sharma briefed that they had appealed for the re-verification of NRC draft in 22 districts, especially in Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Chirang, South Salmara, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Kamrup rural and metro, Darang Udalguri, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Morigaon, Nagaon Hujai, Golaghat, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.

He said, “We appealed for 100 per cent re-verification in the 22 districts and the reason for our appeal was based on the observation of the SC’s sample re-verification, allegation laid by then Morigaon Deputy Commissioner Hemen Das that 39 families (doubtful citizen) were included in the NRC. Moreover a few days back, five officials were suspended for taking a bribe to include the names of few individuals in the NRC and those for places where these officials worked, we demanded re-verification. However, the state and centre demanded 20 per cent re-verification.”
He added that Prateek Hajela has informed the court that the re-verification of 80 lakh people has been done. The court said that over 20 per cent re-verification has been done. But, there is no proper data of the State Government and the State Coordinator. So the court said that the further hearings will be held on July 23.”
Abhijeet Sharma further added that since this NRC will be the final draft that will decide the fate of the indigenous people of the state, so before finally publishing it, re-verification must be done since all other documents including the Assam Accord was documented with anomalies.
