NEW DELHI: The government of India has asked Oil India Limited (OIL) to relocate its corporate head office to Assam from the National Capital Region (NCR) following the massive fire in the Baghjan oil field that took several months to douse.
According to reports, the government wants top company executives to stay close to the firm's key area of operation, in the North-East.
Although OIL’s registered office is in Assam and most of its exploration and production activity exists in the North-East, its corporate headquarters is in Noida.
According to reports, the government wants OIL to shift its office to Assam "within months."

A gas blowout on May 27 last year at Baghjan in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Days later, a fire broke out in the well that took several months to douse. Two OIL firefighters were killed on June 9 when
the well caught re. A 25-year-old electrical engineer died from a high voltage electric shock while he was working at the site on September 9.
A committee set up by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) later found that Oil India did not obtain mandatory clearances for operating the Baghjan field.
