Former Kokrajhar MP Charan Narzary breathed his last at Down Town Hospital in Guwahati at around 4:30 am on Tuesday. He was 87.
Charan Narzary is a former member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, and former member of Legislative Assembly, Assam as representative of the Plains Tribal Council of Assam (PTCA). He was born on May 28, 1933
Hatimatha Village, Goalpara district in Assam.As one of the founding members of the first political party to represent the plains tribals of Assam, he served as thhe GS of the PTCA from the time of its inception in 1967 till 1993.
Coming from a humble background, he fought against poverty and all adversities to achieve higher education, completing his BA from Cotton College and an MA in Political Science in Gauhati University. He did his L.LB and became a Lecturer of Political Science at Kokrajhar College.
As an academician, he always encouraged the student fraternity. He earned respect and popularity among the students.
He also wrote poems and prose for school textbooks which were taught in Boro medium classes.
His genuine concern for the state of the plains tribals of Assam led him to active politics, giving his first electoral victory in 1972 as a member of state legislative assembly and then in 1977 as Member of Parliament. He again was elected to the State Assembly in 1985.
His death has been mourned by many of the high-ranked politicians of the State, including Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who took to Twitter to express his grief at his passing."
