"Citizenship (Amendment) Bill issue has not reached the grassroots level": Tarun Gogoifire

Guwahati, April 25, 2019:

Three-time former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi on Thursday slammed BJP President Amit Shah for disregarding the Supreme Court’s directions for implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and also mentioned that the impact of the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 did not touch the grassroots level in the state.

Addressing the media, Tarun Gogoi said, “I agree that the Congress was unable to take Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to the grassroots level and the same has happened in the case of the indigenous groups and organizations. No impact was seen in the rural areas regarding the Bill. People in rural areas have no idea regarding the Bill although mass protests took place all over.”

Condemning the statement of BJP national president Amit Shah regarding the implementation of Citizenship Bell before NRC Gogoi said, “Amit Shah has always ignored the North East and the sentiments of its people.”
