Citizenship Amendment Bill to be tabled in Rajya Sabha today

Guwahati, January 9, 2019:

‘Bandhs’ and protests do not seem to have deterred the central government from implementing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 as it is to be presented for consideration and passage at the upper house of Parliament, which has extended its winter session till Wednesday.

Smooth passage of the Bill is not expected at the Rajya Sabha as the opposition has more seats there (155 to 89).

It is to be mentioned that the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha yesterday amid protests both inside and outside the Parliament.

A bandh had been called in the North east by NESO, AASU and various other organizations to protest against the passing of the Bill. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured that the Bill would be passed during a massive rally in Silchar on January 4.
