The Ahom Sena burnt the effigies of BJP national president Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Tinsukia on Wednesday opposing the Centre’s move to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Babul Licson, secretary, Ahom Sena, said neither they nor the people of Assam would accept the Bill or citizenship on the basis of religion.
He alleged that Shah had insulted the “sacrifice” of 855 martyrs of the Assam Movement by extending his support to the Citizenship Bill. He asked Sonowal to clear his stand on the Bill.
The organisation further stated that if the BJP-led government in Assam does not implement the Assam Accord in toto then it will face the consequences from the people of the state in the coming days.
