Citizenship Bill row: Protests continue in Assam towns

Guwahati, January 29, 2019:

The ongoing protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 continues to impact the nooks and corners of the state of Assam. And at the present moment, the impact is being felt most in three towns, namely, Kaliabor (Nagaon), Titabor (Jorhat) and Tinukia town.

Kaliabor:

In yet another protest staged by the members of the All Assam Moriya Students Union (AAMSU) yesterday, activists took to the streets of Kaliabor, Assam with torches and engaged in sloganeering. The activists started their protest early in the morning demanding scrapping of the Citizenship Bill. The protest was joined by the vice-president of All Assam Students Union (AASU) Manimadhab Mahanta and around five hundred workers of AAMSU.

Titabor:

Meanwhile, protests are also being held in Jorhat district’s Titabor town. Groups such as AATSA, the Chutiya Students’ Union and KMMS collaborated for a large bike rally to raise awareness among the people regarding the Bill. Slogans such as “Scrap the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill” and “Sarbananda Sonowal go back” were heard at the protest. “Sarbananda Sonowal can lay down his tail in front of the RSS, but we Assamese people will never capitulate to Delhi”, said one of the protest organizers speaking from Titabor.
