Gaurav Gogoi, who represents the Kaliabor Lok Sabha Constituency in Parliament, on Monday lashed out against the contentious Citizenship Bill in the Parliament.
During a discussion about the Bill, ahead of its tabulation in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi alleged that the Bill is in direct violation of the Articles 371 A, B, C, F, and G, which provide special protection to the states in the Northeast Indian region.
Gogoi further accused that the Bill also violated the Assam Accord that was signed at the end of the 6-years long Assam Agitation in the state. "This Bill destabilizes the region, and is against the indigenous people", Gogoi further warned.

It may be mentioned here that despite strong opposition from the opposition, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, was tabled in the Lok Sabha. There were 293 'ayes' for its tabulation, and only 82 nays.
The Bill that was tabled by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeks to grant citizenship to the non-Muslim migrants from the neighboring countries of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Ahead of its introduction, bedlam erupted in the Lok Sabha, with the opposition even accusing the Home Minister of having Hitler-like tendencies.

In the state of Assam, which will not be safeguarded by the Bill as it it does not have any special provisions, the protests against the Bill have reached fever-pitch. Organizations like the KMSS, AJYCP, AASU, etc, have been opposing the Bill tooth-and-nail. Students of Universities across the state have also been opposing the Bill, and have demanded its immediate withdrawal.
