Guwahati, January 2, 2020:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Nalbari unit slammed Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal as the "murderer of the indigenous people of Assam" after its members were brutally assaulted by police for waving black flags at the CM.

Speaking with Inside Northeast, Central Executive of AASU, Bhabajit Bezbaruah said that the AASU and indigenous people have been democratically protesting against the CAA all across Assam.

Condemning the assault on protesters, Bezbaruah said, “On the first day of the year, the protesters were brutally assaulted by the police following orders of the murderer of the indigenous community, CM Sarbananda Sonowal, who is also holding the responsibility of the Home Department. All of them were protesting democratically.”

The government of trying to kill the democratic protesters openly and to this we make our stand clear, that the democratic protest will not be stopped. We have burnt the effigy of CM Sonowal in front of the office and protested for this, he added.

The AASU leader also mentioned that following the assault, the students’ body has launched a series of protests against the government. He added that on Thursday, all the regional units of the AASU in Nalbari have hanged CM Sonowal’s effigy. “We will be approaching the Nalbari SP demanding action against personnel who assaulted the protesters,” he added.

It is to be mentioned here that on Wednesday, the CM was headed to Sarthebari in Barpeta district to attend a religious function when his convoy was disrupted not once, but twice, by the anti-CAA brigade.

After members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) turned up to protest against the CM in Nalbari, authorities reportedly rained blows upon the protesters. This act resulted in an altercation between the AASU members and local authorities and the situation soon turned tense.
