As many as three Assembly Constituencies are headed to the polls in the near future. The by-polls have been necessitated after the results of the Lok Sabha polls were declared on 23 May. The Election Commission will announce the dates of the impending election and we can expect yet another electoral battle is coming soon in Assam.
Three MLAs, namely Abdul Khaleque (MLA from Jania), Pallab Lochan Das (MLA from Rangapara), and Topon Kumar Gogoi (MLA from Sonari) are headed to the Lower House after clinching victories in the high-octane 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Speaking exclusively to Inside Northeast, Deputy Election Commissioner of Assam, Pankaj Chakrabarti has confirmed that the dates of the by-poll elections will be announced after the oath-taking ceremony of the new Lok Sabha MPs.
The Journey from MLA to MP:
Abdul Khaleque won the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat by defeating his nearest rival, Asom Gana Parishad's Kumar Deepak Das. Khaleque grabbed 6,45,173 votes in the minority dominated constituency, winning the seat with a margin of 140,307 votes.
Pallab Lochan Das won one of the battleground Constituencies, Tezpur, by defeating his Congress rival, former bureaucrat turned politician, MGVK Bhanu. Das, who was spotted by Assam's current Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as a young tea garden leader and became an MLA at the age of 33, won the election with an overwhelming margin of 2,42,841 votes. Somewhat controversially, Das had replaced incumbent MP from BJP Ram Prasad Sarmah to fight for the seat, which led the old-timer to rebel against the saffron party.
Topon Kumar Das won the election from the Jorhat Constituency, after beating his nearest rival, Sushanta Borgohain by a margin of around 90,000 votes.
