Amidst the rumour doing rounds that Assam’s Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will be appointed as the new Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president, insiders of the party say that Congress leader Bhupen Bora is likely to be the new President, instead.
The development has been reported days after the veteran leader expressed his willingness to take over the reins of the Congress in the state, with the condition that the high command gives him the freedom to boost the party after a string of defeats on both the national and regional political scene.

The development has been reported post the party's debacles in the recent by-polls to four seats of the Assam Assembly.
It is to be mentioned here that the Congress party in Assam is witnessing a major rift as 13 MLAs have written to the party high command Sonia Gandhi, demanding change in the state leadership.
On Tuesday, 13 Congress MLAs demanded the high command to change state leaders of the Assam Pradesh Legislative Party (CLP). The MLAs demanded the removal of the Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia.

The letter was signed by Rokibul Hussain, Nandita Das, Ajanta Neog, Wazed Ali Choudhury, AK Rishad Alam, Sherman Ali, Ilias Ali, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Nurul Hudda, Matiur Rahman Mandal, Roselina Tirki, Abdul hai Nagri, and Rekibuddin Ahmed.
