BIHPURIA: Prime minister Narendra Modi, escalating the war of words with the Congres ahead of polls, re-christened its grand alliance (mahajot) as a maha jhooth(a great lie).

Launching a scathing attack on the Congress-led alliance at a rally in Sivasagar's Bihpuria, Modi said that the Congress party "can do anything for power" and is not to be trusted.

Modi said that the party, although allied with the Left forces in Assam, is waging a bitter election campaign against the same in poll-bound Kerala.

Launching a blunt attack on the rival party, Mr. Modi said: "The Congress' maha jhooth does not have any leaders, nor does it have any policies. The maha jhooth of the Congress can only give the guarantee of intrusion and lies. It can guarantee encroachers in sattras, naam ghars, and forest areas. It can guarantee corruption in regard to illegal poaching."

Modi further accused the Congress party of "defaming" Assam tea across the world and slammed the party for "neglecting the plight of the tea workers."

"Where the Congress failed to raise the salaries beyond Rs. 100, we promise to uplift the quality of life of the tea community," Mr. Modi added.

"Even Assam's pride Kaziranga has been freed from Congress-bred encroachers. To stop intruders, we have sealed the Dhubri border. The portion that is left is being sealed at the present moment."

The prime minister also said that the people of Assam "should be careful" against the Congress-AIUDF alliance as the latter seeks to "destroy Assam."

"Today, the Congress is aligning with such forces that seek to alter the identity of Assam," he said, adding, "Congress wants to ascend to power using the vote bank of the party which is built on the foundation of intruders."

The Congress-led grand alliance or ‘Mahajath’ comprises the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI (M), the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) Liberation or CPI(ML), and the Anchalik Gana Marcha (AGM).

The Bodoland Peoples’ Front (BPF) has also broken away from the BJP-led alliance to join the ‘Mahajath’.

The 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election is the 15th quinquennial legislative assembly election scheduled to be held in Assam from March 27 to April 6 in three phases, to elect 126 MLAs to the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly.
