GUWAHATI: Reacting to MLA Sherman Ali's suspension from the Congress party with immediate effect, BJP Minister Pijush Hazarika stated that Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah lacked the courage to terminate Ali that's is why he just suspended him from the party.

"We know that when an employee is suspended from his/her position, he/she returns to his/her duties after some time, but when he/she is terminated from his/her position, the person loses his/her job for life," he said.

Minister Hazarika further said, "In Ali's case, whatever he has done is completely unacceptable. Hence only termination from the party would have been a fair punishment for Ali."

Neither Bhupen Kumar Borah nor the party, however, had the courage to do the same.

What was the controversial remark of MLA Sherman Ali?

Despite being a member of the Congress, MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed gave some provocative statements and act as an agent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress claimed.

Issuing a show-cause notice to Ali,  Congress said, “It has been observed by AICC and APCC that despite holding a responsible position as an MLA of the Congress Party you have time and again given statements in media and in a public forum against party policies and matters with communal overtones having great propensity to destroy the social harmony of our state.”

Later, Sherman Ali has been arrested by the city police in Guwahati for his provocative remarks on the killing of eight Assamese in Darrang district in 1983 on October 2.

Ali has now been taken to the Dispur police station.

He was the Baghbor constituency MLA.

Furthermore, Minister Hazarika said, "The party did not terminate Ali because they knew they would need the votes of Baghbor constituency as well as the votes of people of Bangladeshi origin. Therefore Bhupen Borah lacked the courage to terminate MLA ALi."

"He called the people seen as martyrs of the recent agitation in Assamese society in Darrang as "Dacoits," and did not hesitate to use phrases for them. However, the party did not take stern action against him," Hazarika added.

Hence, Minister Pijush Hazarika condemned the act and urged the party and Borah not to repeat it that is not in the best interests of the Assamese people.
