"On January 5, the booth Congress leaders under the leadership of Ranjeet Dass will assemble in Guwahati’s Khanapara", said Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Barpeta, drawing "oohs" and "aahs" from the crowd.
The Assam Minister made the gaffe while addressing a BJP rally crowd numbering close to 50,000. For a while, the people were left in shock, as Ranjeet Dass is the leader of the BJP and not of rivals Congress, of which Biswa Sarma was once a member.

However, Himanta Biswa, much to his credit, did not miss a beat thereafter. "Around 3,000 organisations will take part in the gathering. 30-35000 workers will campaign in 126 constituencies . We will come out together and take a pledge to dedicate ourselves completely for Assam’s development. But we will not get away from the path of Assam’s development", he continued.
The Minister, assuring the party faithfuls of a landslide victory in the upcoming Assembly Elections, said, "Listen up Rockybul Hussain. We - Sarbananda Sonowal, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ranjit Das - will never get away from your path."
At the same rally, the 'Chanakya of the Northeast' also claimed that the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act have been acted out based on 'misinformation.'
He said that the reports of 1-2.5 cr illegal immigrants coming to India after passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is part of a ‘misinformation’ campaign by the BJP’s opposition parties.
“These protests (against the CAA) will win the Guiness award for the biggest protests held on the basis of misinformation”, the Minister mocked.
“They are already here in India — they are already in Assam. Where will they come from? They came before 2014 during the reign of Tarun Gogoi”, the Minister said.
