Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi Calls Upon Regional Parties to Oppose Citizenship Bill

Guwahati, December 1, 2019:

Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress MP from Assam's Kaliabor Constituency, on Sunday, cautioned against the dangers of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The young MP also gave a clarion call to the regional parties to oppose the Bill.

Taking to Twitter, Gaurav, who is the son of the three-time Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, called upon parties with different ideologies, to come together and oppose the Bill. "If parties of different ideologies can come together for the common good of Maharashtra, why can't we do the same in Northeast India?", Gogoi posited.

Further, Gogoi further accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to divide the people of the State with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Citizenship Amendment (Bill) threatens to divide us and put people at risk, Gaurav stated, adding that regional parties should unitedly oppose the Bill. "My appeal to regional forces, put people first and politics behind", the Congress MP stated.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met the leaders, civil society members, of the Northeast Indian states to assure that the region has "nothing to fear" regarding the proposed Citizenship Bill. Shah further told the leaders that the Bill will be passed in the Parliament at any cost. However, he also assured that the Bill would not violate the rights of the existing people of the region.
