GUWAHATI: Assam Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today played down the chances of the Congress and its allies coming to power in the state after a "tsunami". Bora had earlier said that the BJP would be swept away by a tsunami of the Congress-led grand alliance in the ensuing polls.
Responding to Assam Congress president Ripun Bora's statement, Biswa Sarma said, "No tsunami will come here as tsunami cannot come to a riverbank. Tsunamis occur near the seas, and Bangladesh is near the sea."
Taking a veiled jab at the Congress for its alliance with the Muslim-friendly AIUDF, the Minister further added, "Ripun Bora's tsunami can only happen in Bangladesh. We are a riverside civilization and this is where we will stay."
Ripun Bora had earlier defended Badruddin Ajmal against allegations of harbouring communal sentiments.

"Whether Ajmal is communal or not will be determined by the Constitution and the Election Commission; a communal person is not someone who loves his own religion. Rather, it is someone, who hates another's religion," Bora had said.
In response, Biswa Sarma said that Bora should put Ajmal on his lap since the AIUDF supremo is "non-communal."
Congress in Assam has joined hands with Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF and four other parties.
