Indian National Congress President and Prime Minister-hopeful Rahul Gandhi arrived in Guwahati and addressed a large gathering at Khanapara in the city ahead of the all-important Lok Sabha elections. Rahul’s visit to the state comes during a tumultuous period in the region as Arunachal Pradesh continues to boil over the granting of PRCs to non-APSTs and the entire Northeast was involved in a struggle to overthrow the shackles of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill until very recently. These issues have put the ruling BJP and NEDA Governments in the state under intense scrutiny with many criticizing the Government for its apathy towards the plight of the people.

Gandhi started his speech by paying tribute to the laborers who lost their lives after drinking spurious liquor in the tea gardens of Golaghat and Jorhat. He also paid his condolences to Maneswar Basumatary who was martyred during the dastardly attack in Kashmir's Pulwama district.
Slamming the BJP and RSS, Gandhi said that there is a vicious attack on Assam and Northeast by the RSS and BJP on the way of life. “The BJP and RSS have started an assault on the people of the state and their culture and traditions. “The RSS spreads hatred, but it is our intention to connect all corners of the nation. We want an Assam under one umbrella, but the RSS wants to sow division. They want the communities of Assam and their friends like Anil Ambani to reap the benefits”, said Gandhi.
Gandhi also promised to safeguard the culture and identity of the Northeast. “The Congress party will not let the history, culture, and language of Assam be eroded and we will give a proper answer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mohan Bhagwat’s communal policies”
"The Congress party had granted a ‘special status’ to Assam, but BJP took that away from you. As soon as Congress is back in power, we will return the 'special status' to you”, Gandhi promised the people.
