The Asom Andolan Sangrami Mancha, led by former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, has decided to file a petition against BJP president Amit Shah for the contempt of the Supreme Court's order regarding the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Addressing the media on Friday, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that the Mancha has taken the decision to file the contempt petition for making public statements on NRC, whereas the proceeding is still going on in the Supreme Court related to the updation of NRC in Assam.
Urging the anti-Citizenship Bill forces to unite against it, the Mahanta said that the decision has been taken on behalf of the people of Assam.
It may be mentioned that Amit Shah made a controversial statement while addressing a public rally in West Bengal when he said that NRC will come only after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is passed in both houses of the parliament. This, in turn, has created a sense of threat among the people of the state and questions have also been raised over defiance of the apex court’s directives.
