Students of Cotton University on Monday burned a copy of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the ‘Meji’ (traditional bonfire) to oppose the newly implemented law ahead of Bihu celebrations.
They have also called out to the people of Assam to burn copies of the CAA in the ‘Meji’ as a mark of protest against the Act, which, according to majority of the people, threatens the language and cultural identity of the Assamese.

“We are staging a cultural protest by burning the CAA in the ‘Meji’. We also urge the people of Assam to join the protest and burn the copies of CAA in their respective households. I urge every household, every society…wherever you see ‘Meji’, burn the CAA and stage cultural protests at the same time,” said General Secretary of Cotton Students’ Union, Rahul Bordoloi.
Calling the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader “fascist”, he urged the people to stand united against the CAA and join the agitation to protect the local interests.

Lauding the initiative to burn copies of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader Samujjal Bhattacharya also urged the people of the state to feed the CAA to flames during the auspicious occasion of Bihu.
It may be mentioned here that Assam had been protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Bhattacharya and other AASU activists had extended solidarity to the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) protest at Dispur for the twin demands of implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the scrapping of the CAA.
