COVID-19 claims one more life in Assam; Guwahati records highest single-day spike of 249 cases

GUWAHATI: The novel coronavirus claimed one more life in Assam during the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll from the infectious disease in the state to 1,119 and showing a fatality rate of 0.51 per cent.

As many as 59,310 samples were tested and 590 people tested positive, with the positivity rate standing at 0.99 per cent.

So far 76,83,483 tests have been conducted and 2,21,483 people have been diagnosed with the virus in the state.

Of them, 2,16,093 patients have recovered, including 52 overnight. Currently, the state has 2,924 active COVID-19 cases.

Of the 590 new cases, 249 were reported from Kamrup (M), 74 from Dibrugarh, 48 from Kamrup, and 25 from Jorhat.

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday asked the COVID warriors of the state to emphasise on creating micro-containment zone along with extensive testing to combat the resurgence of the pandemic.

Sonowal also asked the deputy commissioners to enforce protective guards to help their respective districts in checking the spike in COVID-19 positive cases.

Moreover, he asked the DCs to ramp up testing facilities, track and treat protocol.

On the other hand, state health and family welfare minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made it clear that COVID-19 situation in the state is not so grim for a lockdown to be imposed.
