GUWAHATI: After being sworn in as Assam’s new chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the COVID-19 pandemic will be the top priority for his government and will start working immediately after the first cabinet meeting tomorrow.
"The government's top priority will be to monitor the COVID-19 situation in the state, and we will take all possible steps to prevent the pandemic from spreading further," CM Sarma said.

He said the new government will work for peace, progress, and development of the state, and for a permanent solution to the flood problem, and to address the issue of microfinance.
Sarma assured that the new government will keep all the commitments made to the public, prior to the elections.
Speaking on the National Register of Citizens (NRC), Sarma said that the government's stance on it is clear and they will urge the Supreme Court for a 20 per cent re-verification in the bordering districts and 10 per cent re-verification of other districts of the state.

Sarma also appealed to all the insurgent groups, including United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) chief, Paresh Baruah, to come forward for talks to bring back permanent peace to the state.
CM Sarma further said that the new government's main vision is to take Assam among the country’s top five states.
