COVID-19 situation in Assam not alarming yet, says Assam chief secretary

GUWAHATI: Assam chief secretary Jishnu Barua today asserted that the COVID-19 situation in Assam is not alarming yet.

Addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan here to announce the new directives to contain the sudden surge of COVID-19, he said: "The COVID situation is not alarming yet in the state. It is very much under control. However, we do not know what might take place in the next 5-7 days."

The state had registered 1,367 COVID-19 positive cases on a single day on April 19.

Principal secretary of health Samir Sinha explained showing data that Assam had registered 4,593 COVID-19 positive cases on a single day on August 12 last year which was the highest at an alarming stage.

hown on average daily new COVID cases in Assam, it was pretty evident that the COVID-19 cases spiraled to three digits, from 61 between March 30 and April 5, directly to 308 cases after April 6, which was the last day of Assam assembly polls.

Asked whether it was an impact of not following COVID-19 protocols during the election campaign, Baruah said: "Election was completely under the Election Commission of India, hence CEO (chief electoral officer) Assam might be able to answer that properly."

Although the press conference was to convey the COVID-19 protocols, including social distancing, to the state and the actions to be taken for not following the same, but the press conference itself was held in a cramped room attended by a number of media persons and government officials. Social distancing and other norms had gone for a toss.
