New Delhi, November 21, 2019:

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI (M) has strongly opposed to the repetition of a fresh exercise of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

The CPI (M) has also opposed to NRC's extension to the whole of India. If a new NRC is exercised in the country, it will only burden and boost the insecurities among the people, according to the Polit Bureau.

It further said that the NRC, if implemented across India, will only serve the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) agenda of dividing the people on communal basis.

It may be mentioned here that Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday batted for a nationwide NRC in the Parliament after the implementation of the same in Assam. Shah had clarified that the NRC does not target any particular community or religion.

Shah had also said that the government would provide asylum to all excluded people, irrespective of religion. “The exercise of NRC will be carried out in the entire country,” he said. He further added that the exercise would be repeated in Assam.

The final NRC had left over 19 lakh people from Assam. The excluded ones have been provided with a window of 120 days to reapply for the NRC in the Foreigners’ Tribunals.
