Hailakandi, May 13, 2019:

The Hailakandi District Administration has relaxed the curfew from 9 am in the morning to 3 pm in the evening in view of the inconvenience faced by the people.

Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Keerthi Jalli is currently holding a DCA review meeting on the incident. Discussions are being held on resuming the internet service and actions to be taken further. The DC has appealed the people of the district not to be influenced by any misleading Facebook post. She also lauded the people for being tolerant during the prevailing situation.

Jalli further stated that an appeal would be made to the government to compensate for the damage of property.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi, Mohneesh Mishra said that the miscreants will be identified and strict action will be taken against them. However, no arrest has been made so far.

Apart from the police and army, a rapid action force has been deployed to tackle any uprising.

It is to be mentioned that on May 10, a group of people belonging to the Muslim community visited the Mosque for Friday prayers. As the Ramjan is going on, numbers of people in the group were too large to acquaint within the hall. So, they decided to read ‘Namaaz’ on the road. However, the administration did not allow fearing traffic issues. As a result of which the clash broke out.

Following this, the curfew was imposed since Friday. The Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Hailakandi Police Station has been suspended. At least 15 people were injured, three of them critically. In the clash and more than 15 vehicles damaged and 12 shops vandalized and set on fire. A youth identified as Jashim Uddin, 28  died at Silchar Medical College and Hospital on May 11.
