Guwahati, April 17, 2019:

A massive cyclone hit the state of Assam late last night accompanied by heavy rain, leading to huge loss of property.

As per reports, the thunderstorm, which was accompanied by cyclonic winds, hit some parts of the state after midnight. It impacted state capital Dispur at approximately 2 am on Wednesday. The wind howled long, loud, and clear as the few pedestrians out on the streets were left scampering for cover. The winds were so heavy and so harsh, in fact, that many tin-roofed houses were completely destroyed.

The Latasil Bihu pandal in Guwahati, which was set to conduct state-level Bihu competitions today, was completely destroyed. The organizers, though, expressed hope that they will be able to conduct the Bihu-themed competitions today.

Reports from middle Assam's Nagaon indicate the storm was as severe there also and at the time of filing this report, it is believed that an elderly woman is trapped in a house.

The storm damaged several public properties, trees, hoardings, electric poles, etc.

The Phase-II of the election will be held in less than 24 hours and it remains to be seen what impact the inclement weather will have on voter turnout.

It may be mentioned that similar incidents of bad weather playing havoc upon people's lives. They have been reported all over the Northeast region of India, including Meghalaya and Mizoram.
