GUWAHATI: With 40 seats of Lower Assam set to go to poll in the third phase of Assam assembly elections on April 6, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal seems to have started his polarisation tactics to consolidate the minority votes in favour of the Congress-led grand alliance.

Two days after Ajmal was seen throwing a gamocha at a supporter’s face, Ajmal’s son Abdur Rahim Ajmal, who is an MLA from Jamunamukh, today said there will be a “daarhi-topi-lungi (beard-skull cap-loincloth)” government at Dispur this time.

Addressing an election meeting of party candidate Foni Talukdar at Bhabanipur in newly formed Bajali district, Rahim today said: “We’ve not got freedom from poverty in last 70 years of independence. But, this time we are going to be free … This time there will be a government of the poor people. There will be your daarhi-topi-lungi government in Assam this time …”

His MP father Badruddin Ajmal was also present in the meeting.

As expected, Ajmal was restrained to certain extent till the first two phases of elections in Upper Assam and Barak Valley were over apparently at the consistent persuasion of the Congress.

He has gone out of reins from today as the Congress hardly has any base in lower Assam zone. Most of the 40 constituencies which will go to polls on April 6 comprise the same linguistic and religious minority community voters supporting the AIUDF as well as the Congress.

BJP star campaigner Himanta Biswa Sarma had correctly professed in the past that Ajmal will show his true colours after the first two phases of the election.
