GUWAHATI: Assam's Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has issued a warning to the citizenry as the 'dark web' and 'cryptocurrency' have made their way into Assam.

"The people of Assam should be very careful. We should be careful about the virtual bank. We are aware that cryptocurrency has reached Assam," Mahanta said.

DGP Mahanta also said that the 'dark web' has also made its way to Assam. The DGP said that the state police force will now tackle the dark web in Assam.

The dark web is the hidden collective of internet sites only accessible by a specialized web browser. It is used for keeping internet activity anonymous and private, which can be helpful in both legal and illegal applications.

They function primarily as black markets, selling or brokering transactions involving drugs, cyber-arms, weapons, counterfeit currency, stolen credit card details, forged documents, unlicensed pharmaceuticals, steroids, and other illicit goods.

Accessing the dark web requires using Tor, an anonymous browser. Unlike other web browsers, like Chrome or Firefox, the Tor browser makes use of a random path of encrypted servers to connect to the web without the risk of being tracked.

On the other hand, cryptocurrency is a form of payment that can be exchanged online for goods and services.

The Assam government has recently launched a 24×7 Cybercrime helpline phone number and the Cyber Forensic Lab cum testing center.

The Cyber Forensic Lab cum testing center has been set up at CID HQ as a part of the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children(CCWC) scheme.
