Guwahati, February 24, 2018:

The death toll in the Assam hooch tragedy, which is the worst hooch tragedy in the country, continues to skyrocket. As per latest reports, the number of people dead in Upper Assam after consuming spurious liquor has now hit 150.

Most of the dead belong to the tea tribe community of estates in Golaghat and Jorhat. Ninety-seven of the deceased belong to Golaghat district, while fifty-three belong to Jorhat.

While addressing the issue, Assam Finance Minister has stated that deaths are being reported every two minutes in the hospitals, while more than two hundred people are in critical condition.

In the crackdown on the illicit liquor racket in the state after the incident, twenty people have been arrested in connection with the case. Moreover, ninety cases have been registered in the state in connection to the incident. The Government has destroyed 15,00literses of spurious liquor in the state.

It is believed that the ‘hooch’ consumed by the victims contained methyl alcohol instead of the usual ingredient ethyl alcohol.
